Gruppo Acentro

Beyond MPLS: an SD-WAN network across Sardinia

For Gruppo Acentro, one of the island’s leading automotive dealers, we gradually dismantled the legacy MPLS network and rebuilt their wide-area network, security and telephony on a redundant, managed SD-WAN architecture, without ever stopping sales or service.

9 sites
Wide-area network on the Cagliari hub
300 Mbps
Dedicated symmetric fibre at the hub
−70%
Telephony costs, from ISDN/PSTN to VoIP with SIP trunk

Support SLA, 2nd-Level assistance

The challenge

Salespeople and mechanics at every branch must stay connected around the clock to the central management systems and the motor-registry network. Growing bandwidth demand had overwhelmed an infrastructure built on MPLS: costly, rigid and inflexible, with end-of-life network gear and PBX and contracts tied to outdated technologies (MPLS for data, ISDN for voice).

The solution

We started from the Cagliari hub, with two Sophos Next Generation firewalls in HA and SD-WAN technology terminating the IPsec VPNs of every remote site. Over the years MPLS was progressively dismantled, with 300 Mbps symmetric dedicated fibre data access and balanced backup links for the sites that needed them. The main office campus network was renewed with enterprise Ruckus switches, and the old PBX replaced by Wildix Unified Communications with VoIP and SIP trunk.

The result

More available bandwidth, next-generation network equipment, sharply improved security with web filtering and per-user policies, and revised costs thanks to the operating-lease model, delivering savings from day one. VPN clients and Unified Communications tools also enabled remote working, making it possible to manage the Covid-19 emergency without disruption.

“After nearly 10 years of partnership we can say we have built a strong working relationship. The solutions adopted have proven successful in every respect, both functional and economic. We look forward to facing tomorrow’s challenges together as well.”
