With most medical data and processes managed by IT systems, a fire, a flood or multiple hardware failures would have had a devastating impact: the highest level of service continuity was required, with no data loss. At the same time, AGID requirements and the Electronic Health Record (EHR) demanded high standards of security, compliant retention and resilience, starting with the replacement of a critical legacy firewall platform.

We built a Business Continuity Data Center in two steps. Step 1: a three-node VMware cluster with high-availability NetApp All Flash storage and a backup and service-restart system. Step 2: a twin NetApp in a Metro Cluster configuration across two data centers, with synchronous data replication. In parallel, the perimeter security was rebuilt with a high-availability Sophos platform (IPS, URL filtering, antivirus) and next-generation Endpoint Protection, plus infrastructure management under an all-inclusive Smart Care - NOC support contract.

All objectives were achieved — performance, room to grow, data protection and business continuity — with optimal RPO and RTO values. Even in the event of total unavailability of the primary data center, no data is lost (RPO 0) and services restart within minutes (RTO near zero). A secure, reliable foundation that made it possible to extend digital processes to the entire workforce and to become the first facility in Sardinia to submit every outpatient activity to the EHR within one hour.
