The growing need to exchange data between the satellite sites and the data center required renewing the wide-area network and the entire systems infrastructure. The architecture was outdated: isolated standalone firewalls across several sites, unable to intelligently aggregate incoming data lines and only able to provide a backup, with fragmented management. The previous provider could not guarantee adequate security, reliability and control over the exchange of information — a critical requirement for healthcare data in transit between sites.

A distributed SD-WAN infrastructure was built around a hub of two Forcepoint NGFW firewalls in a high-availability cluster (malware detection, IPS, URL filtering and sandboxing), connected to the other sites and governed by a single software management console that makes full use of the available bandwidth at each site. In parallel, the data center was renewed with a 3-node Nutanix hyperconverged cluster, while data protection combines file-system-level snapshots with Veeam backup, safeguarding healthcare data without impacting production services. Telephony was virtualized on a VM as a unified communications platform, with remote extensions and virtual meetings across sites.

A more reliable and traceable network, better-protected healthcare data, vastly improved data center performance and a single point of support management. IT absorbed the company’s doubling without adding staff, keeping both direct costs and TCO under control. Remote extensions and web conferencing proved vital at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and in 2020 adding a single node — with one click — was enough to grow capacity by around 35%.
